Questions as Developer Grabs Section of Starehe Boys Land
A former student of Starehe Boys Centre, banker Mohamed Wehliye, has raised alarm after a private developer fenced off a portion of the institution’s land in the Westlands neighborhood of Nairobi.
Wehliye stated in a statement that the school holds the parcel’s title, which has been affirmed by Nairobi County and the National Land Commission (NLC).
Wehliye noted that a primary school called Bohra occupied the parcel in the upscale estate and that a solution between the school and Starehe was in the works after the late Dr. Geoffrey William Griffin rejected the notion of evicting a school.
“Even though SBC owns the land, Dr Griffin was hesitant to evict an educational institution that was serving the community, the central banker noted.
“An amicable solution was being sought over the years. Now a grabber has put a perimeter wall around the vacant part of the land and it is about to be stolen.”

If true, the move joins a list of other audacious attempts by private developers in Nairobi to seize public land, in most cases with the assistance of senior government officials.
Starehe Boys is a prestigious institution that has a legacy of producing men who hold the highest positions in the private and public sectors.
Kenyans attribute the increase in land grabbing to corruption in the Lands Ministry and county administrations.
Grabbers have been targeting vacant properties owned by public institutions such as schools, markets, and hospitals, as well as private properties whose leases are about to expire.
Efforts to create titles for public amenities have yielded scant results. However, even when titles exist, some individuals conspire with land officials to unlawfully transfer parcels.
As the competition for high-rise apartments intensifies, the squatters have targeted elderly couples in Westlands, Parklands, and other affluent neighborhoods.
