Haitian Police Caught in Explosive Feud with Kenyan Peacekeepers? Officials Scramble to Deny Rift
The Haitian National Police (HNP) has strongly denied claims of a disagreement with the Kenyan peacekeepers from the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission. In a statement on February 22, HNP dismissed viral social media posts that suggested Kenyan Commander Godfrey Otunge and Haitian Commander Rameau Normil were at odds.
HNP explained that while both groups are working together to stop gang violence, some critics are spreading false information online to distract the public. โAfter increasing our operations in the West department to dismantle gang hideouts, a few individuals began circulating misleading messages on social networks,โ the police stated. HNP clarified that there is no refusal by Commander Normil to work with Commander Otunge.

The Haitian officers, together with Kenyan peacekeepers, are actively involved in gang operations and are exploring new strategies to reduce violence across Haiti. HNP urged the public and media to remain vigilant and not be swayed by false claims.
โHNP is committed to fighting all forms of serious crime and restoring peace and security throughout our nation,โ the statement added.
This clarification comes two weeks after Kenya deployed an additional 144 police officers, including 24 elite all-female SWAT team members, to Haiti. This move followed earlier deployments by President William Rutoโs administration, bringing the total number of Kenyan police in Haiti to 744.
In related news, the United States donated 20 armored personnel carriers to support the peacekeeping mission. The US Department of State confirmed on February 20 that these vehicles are essential in the fight against gang violence in Haiti, reinforcing the efforts of the 1,000 MSS personnel working to improve security in the region.
