UDA MP Attacked in Parliament After Apologising for Bribery Allegation Remarks

Juja MP George Koimburi faced a challenging situation in Parliament on Tuesday, July 30, as he apologized for his previous comments suggesting that MPs had been bribed to support the Finance Bill, 2024.

Koimburi asked for forgiveness from his colleagues, admitting he had claimed that those who voted ‘YES’ had been bribed Ksh2 million.

He requested his fellow members to pardon him, expressing regret and promising never to make such statements again.

During his apology on the parliamentary floor, Koimburi explained that his comments were made under duress at a church service, influenced by a hostile crowd during the intense Gen Z movement.

He clarified that his statements were based on ‘hearsay,’ alleging that MPs who supported the bill in its second reading had received Ksh2 million in bribes.

However, his apology did not go smoothly. Some MPs criticized him for his careless remarks, arguing that his statements had caused significant harm.

Led by Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah, the legislators reproached Koimburi. Ichung’wah, in particular, accused him of staging a performance and lying during a church service.

Ichung’wah also noted that Koimburi’s comments had aggravated public anger towards the Finance Bill.

South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro criticized the sincerity of Koimburi’s apology, suggesting that he failed to grasp the impact of his words.

Osoro highlighted that some MPs had their valuables damaged by protestors angered by the bribery allegations. The National Assembly Majority Whip reported being booed during a church service, with congregants allegedly chanting ‘two million.’

Anne Wamuratha, Kiambu Woman Representative, emphasized the severity of Koimburi’s statements and called for a national apology to address the issue.

Following the apology, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula declared that the MP was forgiven but cautioned others against spreading false information under pressure.

This development occurred shortly after Juja constituents issued Koimburi a 10-day ultimatum to provide details on his performance and accomplishments since taking office nearly two years ago.

The public petition, filed by Gichohi Waweru on behalf of some Juja residents, requested that this information be provided via email within 10 days of receipt.
