UDA Governor Declines To Implement New Tariffs Proposed By National Govt

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has rejected the implementation of recently suggested water tariffs by the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB).

The Governor announced on Sunday that the county would refrain from raising prices for its customers in response to the new tariffs, citing various concerns.

“The county has noted contents of a letter from water regulator WASREB that proposes to increase water tariffs in Murang’a. Murang’a county therefore does not agree with the proposed change of tariff,” stated Kang’ata

WASREB suggested raising the rates per cubic meter for three water companies operating in Murang’a West, Gatamathi, and Gatanga.

In Murangโ€™a West, WASREB recommended setting a rate of Ksh 90 per cubic meter. Additionally, the national government agency proposed rates of Ksh 120 per cubic meter for Gatanga Water and Sanitation Company and Ksh 60 per cubic meter for Gatamathi Water and Sanitation Company.

Initially, the county pointed out that there were adequate reserves for non-revenue water, presenting it as a potential alternative for customers in case the tariff plan is put into effect.

โ€œIncrement of tariffs will hence lead to burdening of loyal customers, hence incentivizing them to shift towards non-revenue,โ€ read the statement in part.

Secondly, the Governor pointed out that the County was enhancing its investment in the water sector by boosting allocated budgets and implementing a Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) initiative.

By executing these actions, the county government has asserted that there will be no necessity to raise the tariffs.

Additionally, Murangโ€™a County has indicated that they might have to merge the three companies into a single entity if the pressure to raise tariffs continues.

Irungu Kang’ata has also urged the county to examine the proposed tariffs about those of similar counties, pointing out that these counties have effectively addressed the tariff issue.

โ€œMurang’a County Government, therefore, advises its Water service providers to learn from Nyeri best practices and only adjust tariffs once the Water Service Providers attain the national benchmark of 25% for non-revenue water.”

This is the only time the county can consider approving the adjustment,โ€ stated the governor.
