TUM Students Set Institution Building Ablaze in Protest

During demonstrations that took place on Monday, June 26, students from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) set fire to a building located on university grounds.

GossipA2Z has received confirmation from a reliable source that the fire was started by students who were protesting the school administration’s decision to recently implement fee increases.

According to our source, the dissatisfied students initially held a peaceful demonstration, but it quickly descended into chaos, which led to the destruction of the institution’s student center.

Students began their demonstrations against the administration’s plan to unexpectedly revise the school fee structure early in the morning, carrying sticks and chanting against the plan.

As a result of the administration’s allegedly choosing to ignore the demonstrations, the students became enraged and set fire to one of the buildings on campus.

Officers of the law and firefighters rushed to the location to defuse the potentially dangerous situation and extinguish the fire.

During the running battles between the two groups, the security officers threw tear gas at the protesting students.

One of the students told GossipA2Z that they went on strike because the institution would not listen to their petition against raising university fees during a time when the majority of students were having financial difficulties.

The student mentioned that the school had increased the fees for their department by Ksh9,000, taking them from Ksh19,000 to Ksh28,000 for each semester without providing any justification.
