Stunning Incident: Woman Leaps into River with Baby on Back
According to Gichugu sub-county police commander Johnson Wachira, the body of young Precious Wairimu was found floating in the Nyamindi River at Gichogo village on Saturday night.
The heartbreaking discovery was made by local residents who were fetching water from the river, and they quickly alerted the authorities.
Efforts are underway to find the body of Wairimu’s mother, Maureen Wangui, who is feared to have drowned in the river along with her daughter.
The tragic events unfolded earlier on Saturday morning when 29-year-old Maureen Wangui took the drastic step of jumping into the Nyamindi River with her five-year-old child, Precious Wairimu, strapped to her back.
A watchman at the Kainamoi coffee factory witnessed the incident and promptly raised the alarm, leading to a search and rescue effort by local authorities and community members.
The shocking incident has deeply affected the residents of Kabiro-ini village, who are struggling to come to terms with the loss of Maureen and Precious.

Wangui and her daughter had been visiting her grandmother, Fridah Njoki, whose children are civil servants working in Embu County.
Njoki expressed her sadness and disbelief at the situation, describing Wangui and her daughter as kind and good-natured individuals.
She remains puzzled by her granddaughter’s decision to end her own life and take her daughter’s life with her.
The body of young Precious Wairimu has been transported to Kibugi funeral home, while the search for Maureen Wangui’s remains continues.
The local community is working closely with the police to locate her body and bring some semblance of closure to the grieving family.
