Political Heavyweights Gachagua and Mudavadi Splurge Ksh168 Million on Luxury Wheels
During the fiscal year 2022/2023, the offices of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua spent Ksh168 million on the procurement of new vehicles.
According to the National Government Budget Implementation Review Report, the expenditure for vehicles and other transport apparatus by the office of the Deputy President amounted to Ksh91.96 million.
76.68 million was spent by Mudavadi’s office, which was established after Ruto won the presidency in the 2022 elections.
However, the report did not specify the quantity or variety of vehicles purchased by the offices.
As per the regulations set forth by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), official transportation for the Deputy President is provided in vehicles of unlimited capacity.
In contrast, Mudavadi is classified as an other state officer and is granted use of an official vehicle featuring a maximum engine displacement of 3000cc.
Additionally, the two are permitted to watch chase automobiles that accompany the vehicles they are operating.
Fuel
Additionally, the diesel consumption of both offices surpassed one million.
The office of the DP spent Ksh15.80 million on petrol and lubricants, whereas Mudavadi’s office spent Ksh18.14 million.
In this category, government institutions collectively allocated Kshs3.86 billion.
Travel
When considering domestic travel, Mudavadi was more booked with engagements than Gachagua.
The domestic travel expenditures of the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary amounted to Ksh72.85 million, in contrast to Gachagua’s Ksh63 million.
In contrast, Gachagua was more economical than Mudavati in terms of international travel, spending Ksh40.76 million. Ksh21.50 was spent by Mudavadi on international travel.
“The total expenditure by MDAs was Ksh20.37 billion comprising Ksh14.04 billion for domestic travel and Ksh6.33 billion for foreign travel. The National Assembly recorded the highest domestic and Foreign travel at Ksh4.81 billion and Ksh1.59 billion respectively,” read the report in part.
Furniture
Office furnishings and general equipment were acquired for Ksh82.8 million, according to the report by the CoB on Gachagua’s office.
Conversely, Ksh109.68 million was spent by Mudavadi’s office on furniture and other office supplies.
Furthermore, Ks27.10 was allocated by the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary towards the renovation of offices. The headquarters of Kenya Railways, located along Haile Selassie Avenue, was selected as the office’s location upon its inception.
