Pay JSS Interns Will Get as Basic Salary and Allowances

The government has announced that around 26,000 contract teachers in Junior Secondary Schools from 2023 will be transitioned to permanent and pensionable status starting July 1.

This announcement brings relief to many teachers who had previously expressed concerns over insufficient wages affecting their ability to sustain their livelihoods.

Junior Secondary School interns were earning Sh20,000 monthly, while those in lower primary positions were receiving Sh15,000.

Intern teachers are not eligible for any allowances or the teachers’ health insurance scheme.

With their protest extending beyond two weeks, the question arises: what will their earnings be under permanent and pensionable terms?

Most Junior Secondary School interns hold degrees and diplomas.

Upon confirmation of permanent and pensionable terms, they will enter job group C2, equivalent to a senior teacher at the primary school level.

The salary for job group C2 ranges from Sh34,955 to a maximum of Sh43,694.
