MP Salasya Replaced in Parliamentary Committee Role

On Tuesday, March 5, Moses Wetangula, the Speaker of the National Assembly, declared the substitution of Peter Salasya, the Member of Parliament for Mumias East, from the Departmental Committee on Regional Development.

In the announcement, the Speaker mentioned that the contentious lawmaker would be substituted with Paul Abuor, who represents Rongo Sub County as a Member of Parliament.

The alterations were implemented after the majority of legislators approved his removal from the Committee.

“Further to the resolution of the house of Tuesday, October 27, 2022, appointing members into the various committees and according to the provisions of standing order 173, this house further approves the appointment of Paul Abuor MP to replace Peter Kalerwa Salasya MP in the departmental committee of Regional Development,” read the speaker of the national assembly.

The modifications were initiated in response to the issues raised by Kimani Ichung’wah, the Majority Leader of the National Assembly. He expressed concerns about certain lawmakers not actively participating in their assigned committees.

Ichung’wah urged a reassessment of the involvement of Members of Parliament in their respective committees to identify those who were avoiding attendance at committee meetings.

“Immediately after the recess, the selections committee shall be sitting to reevaluate the performance of members in committees because a reevaluation process will mean not just attendance but how actively you participate in committee sittings,” Ichung’wah noted.

“We are reevaluating your active participation in committees since we are almost mid-term and we evaluate who is keen on their varied committees,” he added.

As per the Member of Parliament for the Kikuyu Sub County, the leadership of the National Assembly will also assess the presence of members in the chamber.

Ichung’wah, supporting the decision, emphasized that it would address the issue of legislators who consistently arrive late for parliamentary sessions.

“We have a challenge, and many times the speaker sits on his seat and waits for members for ten minutes to find their way into the chamber at 2.30 pm,” the Kikuyu legislator stated.

The heads of the various parliamentary committees were encouraged to provide the names of members who were not actively engaged in the different committee activities.
