Missing Woman Found Safe Weeks After Her Father Took His Life Because of Her Disappearance
Hannah Kobayashi, a woman from Hawaii, has been “found safe” after her father tragically took his own life following her disappearance, according to her family and local authorities.
The 30-year-old flew from Hawaii to Los Angeles at the start of last month, planning to catch a connecting flight to New York on November 8, but she missed her connection.
The aspiring photographer from Maui disappeared a few days later, sending “alarming” messages to her family before vanishing.
Her father, Ryan, traveled to Los Angeles to locate her, joining other family members and volunteers in the search. Sadly, by late November, he was found deceased in a parking lot near LA International Airport, having taken his own life, according to police and his family.
Following an extensive search operation, the Los Angeles Police Department reclassified her case as a voluntary missing person.
Surveillance footage revealed that Kobayashi crossed into Mexico on November 12 by herself, prompting authorities to end the search for her.
Authorities later confirmed that Ms. Kobayashi used cash and her passport to purchase a bus ticket at Union Station in Los Angeles, traveling to the US-Mexico border where she crossed on foot into Tijuana.
Her family reported receiving odd text messages from her phone once she reached Los Angeles, after which all communication stopped.
On November 11, her mother texted her asking if she had arrived in New York, to which Ms. Kobayashi responded, “No.”

She also sent messages to friends expressing fear for her safety and suspicion that someone was attempting to steal her identity.
Her family initially worried she may have fallen victim to human trafficking.
However, police stated that the investigation revealed no evidence of foul play or trafficking.
“She has the right to privacy, and we respect her choices, but we understand the worry loved ones feel. A simple message could offer reassurance to those who care about her,” said Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell.
On Wednesday night, Ms. Kobayashi’s family shared that she had been “found safe.”
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) also confirmed her location.
A statement from the family, signed by Brandi Yee and Sydni Kobayashi, read: “We are incredibly relieved and grateful that Hannah has been found safe.
“This past month has been an unimaginable ordeal for our family, and we kindly ask for privacy as we heal and process everything weโve experienced.
“We are deeply thankful to everyone who supported us during this difficult time. Your kindness and concern have meant the world to us.”
The LAPD expressed their relief at the news of her safe return.
“With this new information, this matter has now become private, and we will conclude our investigation,” the department added.
