Ministry of Education Announces New Primary, Secondary, and Form 1 School Opening Dates

The Ministry of Education has released the schedule for the commencement of the academic year’s first term in 2024.

As per the Ministry’s Christmas announcement, pre-primary, primary, and secondary educational institutions are scheduled to commence classes on January 8, 2024.

In the meantime, students entering Form 1 are expected to arrive at their designated schools by January 15th.

Education Minister Ezekiel Machogu ordered field officers to be available at their assigned locations every workday, aiming to support parents in getting ready for the approaching 2024 school timetable.

Machogu additionally urged parents and guardians to actively assist students in preparing for the upcoming reopening of schools.

He encouraged parents to fulfill their highest duty of safeguarding their children during the holiday period, highlighting numerous temptations that could potentially steer young individuals in the wrong direction.

The computer scientist emphasized the importance of caregivers warning their children about the widespread problem of drug and substance abuse in certain regions of the country.

Despite the government’s communication, the reporting schedule might pose difficulties for Junior Secondary School (JSS) students due to more than 20,000 intern teachers initiating a strike notice starting from the first term of 2024.

The JSS intern teachers have been engaged in a dispute with the Teachers Service Commission regarding their plea for permanent and pensionable employment status.

The educators at JSS are demonstrating against the commission’s choice to keep them as interns for a second year while providing only a stipend.

Therefore, they are requesting long-term positions, stating their qualifications, and suggesting that the internship status should conclude after a year.

Due to this notification, the TSC warned the intern teachers that they would be dismissed if they went ahead with the strike.

Nevertheless, a court in Nairobi upheld their agreements, stating that the commission was required to maintain these contracts until the petition brought to court was adjudicated.
