Mike Sonko Denies Fake Death Certificate and Smear Campaign Allegations
A death certificate circulating with the name and image of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is fraudulent.
The former governor addressed the issue on his X platform on Tuesday, clarifying that allegations of him faking his death to evade prison were part of a smear campaign against him.
Sonko blamed his opponents for these claims, stating that the rumors started after he won the Makadara MP seat.
“Politics is indeed a dirty game!! Faking a death certificate while I am still alive!! All these were mere propaganda, smear campaigns, and diversionary tactics aimed at tarnishing my reputation,” Sonko wrote on X.

He mentioned that these tactics began immediately after his victory in the Makadara by-election in 2011, intending to force another by-election.
Sonko pointed out that although he has previously addressed the issue, his detractors continue to use the same falsehoods to damage his reputation.
He explained that the matter was resolved by the courts in an appeal he filed in 2001.
Through the appeal, he was acquitted of the charge of escaping from prison.
“I was taken to Kibra Court that same year, and all accusations were proven to be mere propaganda,” he stated. “The only evidence presented in the escape case was successfully appealed in the High Court’s Misc. Appeal case number 80 of 2001, leading to my release from prison.”
