Meru MCA Reveals How Connected UDA Politicians Pushed for Kawira Mwangaza’s Impeachment
New allegations have surfaced concerning the impeachment proceedings against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, with claims that influential United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party members were involved in orchestrating her removal.
These claims emerged during the ongoing impeachment hearings, as Governor Mwangaza faces her third impeachment attempt.
At the Senate plenary session, Advocate Elias Mutuma, representing Mwangaza, expressed concerns about the involvement of political leaders in Meru in the impeachment process. He emphasized that the governor’s defense has consistently been that she is being targeted by local political forces.
Mutuma noted, “The governor was here last year, and she’s back this year. Her defense remains that she is targeted by Meru’s political leadership.”
He then inquired whether there was any proof of political influence affecting the current impeachment proceedings.
In a surprising twist, Evans Mawira, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Mitunguu Ward in South Imenti Constituency, confirmed UDA officials’ participation in the impeachment efforts.

Mawira affirmed, “That is correct,” when asked about the political forces behind the impeachment. He further explained, “After Meru’s political leadership deemed the governor to be acting independently, MCAs were mobilized along party lines, starting with the UDA party.”
Mawira described a meeting where he was contacted directly by the UDA party coordinator.
“I received a call from the UDA party coordinator. We met with Hon. Rindikiri and Hon. Kathuri Murungi, and we decided to inform other UDA members that the party’s stance was to withdraw all support for the governor,” he said.
The involvement of the ruling UDA party adds complexity to the ongoing situation in Meru County, especially given that the governor was elected as an independent candidate.
Governor Mwangaza, who has consistently denied any misconduct, argues that her impeachment is driven by political motives.
According to the Senate schedule, the final hearings are set for Tuesday, August 20, after which the evidence will be reviewed before a ruling is made on the governor’s potential removal from office.
