Meru Governor’s Impeachment Hearing: Kawira Mwangaza Claims Threats to Life

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, who is in a precarious position, has asserted that her detractors have issued her numerous threats and are intent on hounding her from office.

Mwangaza stated, while addressing senators during the hearing on her impeachment motion, that the opposition she has encountered from certain county legislators has impeded her ability to govern.

Additionally, the governor offered support for her spouse, Murega Baichu, who supported her by releasing a song in which he addressed Mwangaza’s critics.

Throughout the hearing, Mwangaza was directed to recite the song’s lyrics by Meru County Assembly lead counsel Muthomi Thiankolu. Throughout the oration, she was questioned as to whether the song was intended for a particular leader.

“The last time she dined in Nairobi was during her last impeachment and that’s what is making her enemies angrier. They want Kawira to refrain from doing Okolea programs and instead go to Nairobi to dine with them, using taxpayers’ money,” Mwangaza quoted her husband’s lyrics.

“Kawira has declined and insisted that her work is to serve the public. Let the jealous hang themselves, let the jealous hang themselves.”

In reply, Mwangaza asserted that the lyrics did not specifically target any leader. She further stated that Baichu’s defense of her was warranted in light of the persistent threats and persecution.

“It is true. He should come and defend the wife,” she stated.

Amid the cross-examination, Thiankolu leveled allegations against Mwangaza, alleging that she had appointed her two sisters to high-ranking positions while casting doubt on their qualifications for such roles.

Mwangaza, in support of her sisters’ participation in significant diplomatic gatherings, provided an example in which she was unable to attend both the State House meeting and the Slovakian embassy in Nairobi due to a scheduling conflict. Upon realizing this, she advised her sisters to attend the Embassy meeting instead.

She clarified that the attendance of her sisters at the function was a mere coincidence and not her intention.

“I was invited to the embassy in Nairobi, Slovakian. While on my way, I was diverted to attend a function at State House. I was accompanied by the county secretary of Meru, personal assistant, bodyguard, and driver. On the way, there was an urgent meeting, so I decided to attend the meeting first so I could join the team later,” she added.

“The county secretary went to the embassy. After the meeting ended at State House, the meeting at the Embassy was also done, so I did not assign my sister any duty but it’s just because I had traveled with them at the time.”

She emphasized that serving the public with initiatives like the Okolea program, which assists low-income payers in the county, has been her top priority over the past year. She refuted the accusations of misusing taxpayer funds for international travel, stating that her sole outing to South Korea occurred half a year ago.

The Senators are scheduled to vote on whether to save Mwangaza or uphold the county assembly’s resolution to impeach her and remove her from office.
