Manhunt Launched: Police Officer Assaulted and Firearm Stolen During Violent Anti-Government Protests in Bondo

Police in Bondo Sub-county are actively searching for suspects involved in assaulting a police officer and stealing his firearm during last Tuesday’s anti-government protests in the area.

The brutal attack, captured on video by one of the assailants, has elicited mixed reactions online, with most people condemning the attackers.

A police report from Bondo Police Station details that during the day-long demonstrations, five protesters cornered and overpowered an anti-riot police officer, beat him, and then fled with his weapon.

The officer was part of a reinforcement team deployed to bolster local security.

An incident report states that around five individuals ambushed Police Constable Joseph Tioko from Sigomere Police Station, Unguja Sub-county, who was on reinforcement duty and stole his riot gun (a tear gas launcher). Tioko sustained severe head injuries and was swiftly taken to Haven Hospital in critical condition.

Constable Tioko’s colleagues quickly rescued him from his attackers.

The anti-riot unit chased the suspects, who ran towards Migingo market and apprehended Sostene Mvune, 21, recovering the stolen firearm. The other suspects remain at large and are being pursued.

Police allege that agitators were sent to Bondo specifically to attack the police station.

The Bondo protests, which began around noon and intensified until 9:30 PM, saw local protesters and ferry gangs attacking the station with crude weapons and slings, stoning the buildings for most of the day.

The injured officer was later transported to Kisumu for further medical treatment.
