The individual responsible for the counterfeit East African money has disclosed his intention to legitimize the fabricated SHEAFRA notes, asserting that they are intended to become the new official currency for East Africa.

Moses Haabwa, through his posts on X on a page named the “Government of East Africa”, has created various denominations of the currency claiming he wants to make it legal.

The Ugandan self-acclaimed overseer of the “Federal Republic of East Africa Government” when questioned about his actions stated that he had initiated the move to make it legal.

“We are in the process of making these things legal, step by step. Starting from the country we are in,” responded Haabwa.

In an interview with the BBC, Haabwa expressed that he created the currency to instill hope in East Africans, given the prolonged delay in the release of the proposed common currency.

Nevertheless, he pointed out that he hadn’t planned for the post to gain as much attention as it did, especially considering that it wasn’t the first post on his page to do so.

The five shilling denomination, which made headlines on Sunday, was made through the “Government of East Africa” a page that is verified with a Grey Tick on X.

As per X’s statement, the verification is exclusively granted to governmental or multilateral entities, creating uncertainty about how Haabwa obtained it.

“Any organization that purchases a subscription to Verified Organizations will receive a gold checkmark and square avatar if they are a business, or a grey checkmark and square avatar if they are a governmental or multilateral organization”, read X’s guidelines.

Moreover, Haabwa asserts that they are former ambassadors of an undisclosed European duchy.

An examination of the declared dukedom uncovered that, despite its enigmatic nature, it holds an official gray verification check from X.

In the meantime, the East African Community has expressed its intention to introduce a unified currency by the year 2031.
