Maina Njenga’s Abductors Drove Subarus, Were Armed And Hooded – Azimio

Sunday, the Azimio Coalition demanded the urgent release of former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga, who was reportedly kidnapped last evening.

In a press release, Azimio noted that Maina Njenga’s whereabouts remain unclear.

The political group asserted that Njenga’s kidnappers were armed. The Azimio Coalition also disclosed that the kidnappers hid their identities and drove Subarus.

In addition, the coalition disclosed that Njenga’s family is unaware of his whereabouts.

Raila Odinga speaking while accompanied by Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua and other Azimio leaders on Wednesday, May 24, 2023.

“The information we have suggests that the abductors did not identify themselves, nor did they state that he was under arrest,” the statement read in part.

“All indications point to this being an operation carried out by rogue police.”

Azimio revealed that there was a possibility that the Special Support Unit had apprehended Mr. Njenga.

Azimio demanded his immediate and unconditional release from his court appearance while condemning his abduction.

“We want to make it clear that we will hold the Inspector General of Police fully accountable for Maina’s life should anything happen to him,” Azimio warned.

The Raila Odinga-led party also disclosed that there was a growing trend of the ruling party harassing and, in some cases, kidnapping leaders with opposing political views.

According to Azimio, the government employed this strategy to coerce opposition politicians into compliance.

Azimio, perceiving deceit in the detention, remarked that a pending case in which Njenga was released on bond could have contributed to the abduction.

“Kenyans need to understand that Maina is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow for a pre-trial, and this arrest is clearly an attempt to interfere with that scheduled pre-trial,” Azimio stated.

The Makadara Law Courts released Maina on a Ksh200,000 bond on July 25 after he was charged with planning anti-government protests.

Ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was escorted by police officers at the Nakuru Law Courts on Wednesday, May 24, 2023.
