KPA Re-Floats Liberian Ship After Sinking for 24 Hours at Indian Ocean

Kenya Ports Authority effectively refloated the Liberian container ship MSC Eagle F to prevent a marine ecological disaster at the entrance of the Kilindini channel.

According to KPA, the ship had been submerged for over twenty-four hours following a grounding at approximately 11:35 a.m. on Monday.

The Liberian ship’s engine failed as it approached the Kilindini channel from berth Louis, Mauritius, her final berth.

However, the channel remained unaffected as ship movements continued as usual.

The newly acquired salvage tug Mwokozi II, with a bollard draw of 120 tons and 18 crew members on board, led the afternoon joint salvage operation.

The harbor tugs Pate and Nyangumi assisted Mwokozi II with 75 tons and 58 tons of bollard draw, respectively.

The three tugboats of KPA successfully towed the 9709-metric-ton ship into port, putting an end to the tense moments caused by the ship’s grounding.

The successful salvage operation was conducted in conjunction with a team from Southern Engineering Company (SECO), whose tug, Alpha Falcao, remained by the vessel overnight in case the crew required evacuation.

Mwokozi 11, delivered by Med Marine to the Kenya Ports Authority in April of this year, is the most powerful tugboat ever delivered to Kenya’s littoral and primarily operates in Mombasa.

It was designed to satisfy the requirements of the authority for ship handling, towing, and salvage operations in East Africa and the Indian Ocean.

The salvage operations generate a new revenue source for the Kenya Port Authority and enhance its reputation as a leading port along the coast of the western Indian Ocean.

It is a vital addition to Mombasa, according to Med Marine, and is part of Kenya Ports Authority’s modernization and maintenance program, which seeks to improve maritime efficiency and safety.
