Kenya’s Most Daring Jailbreaks: Chilling Escapes That Shocked the Nation
Recent jail escapes in Kenya have startled the nation, leaving citizens baffled and filled with questions.
These incidents, which seem like scenes from a movie, involve daring methods such as sneaking out unnoticed or breaking through walls. Below are three of the most notable cases.
Collins Jumaisiโs Escape from Gigiri Police Station
The escape of Collins Jumaisi, a suspect in the Kware murders, on August 20, 2024, shocked Kenyans. Jumaisi, along with 12 other detainees, fled from Gigiri Police Station after cutting through a wire mesh and climbing over the stationโs perimeter wall.
Jumaisi had been arrested a month earlier in Kayole, Nairobi, and had confessed to luring and killing 42 women. His first victim was reportedly his wife, whom he strangled and dumped at a site where he disposed of other victims.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed these details, vowing to rearrest him. A cash reward has been announced for information that could lead to his capture.

Escape of Terror Convicts from Kamiti Prison
In November 2021, three convicted terrorists escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison, one of Kenyaโs most secure facilities. Musharraf Abdalla, Joseph Juma, and Mohammed Abdi slipped away quietly in the early hours of November 15.
They coordinated with accomplices outside to avoid detection and managed to elude authorities temporarily. The DCI announced a Ksh60 million reward for tips leading to their arrest.
However, the trio was recaptured days later in Mwingi, Kitui County, as they attempted to flee to Somalia. After their dramatic return to Nairobi under heavy security, they were sentenced to an additional 15 months for the jailbreak.
Bungoma Jailbreak in 2020
On August 16, 2020, 11 remandees escaped from Bungoma Central Police Station. They dug through a thick wall using a metal bar from an inner door frame.
Most of the escapees were facing serious charges like robbery and defilement and were awaiting COVID-19 tests before being transferred to prison.
While one of the escapees was shot and arrested at Bungoma Airstrip shortly after the breakout, two others were captured later. The rest remain at large.
These incidents highlight significant security challenges in Kenyaโs detention facilities.
