Kenya Airways Responds to Claims of Unlicensed Pilot Operating For 8 Years

On Saturday, the nation’s flag-carrier airline, Kenya Airways, responded to allegations that have been circulating on social media suggesting that an unlicensed pilot had worked for the airline for the previous eight years.

The national airline issued a statement in which it emphasized that the reports were incorrect and asked Kenyans to handle the information as if it were a hoax or fake news.

In its response, the airline claimed that there has never been a moment when it employed a pilot who lacked the appropriate qualifications and that it has never happened at any particular period.

“All Kenya Airways pilots and crew go through very rigorous training, background, and security checks to ensure that they are qualified to operate,” the statement read in part.

This includes but is not limited to, conducting background checks on applicants, which entails verifying their training credentials with the respective organizations.

“Kenya Airways operates in a highly regulated environment with regular audits from several regulators across its network,” KQ stated.

In addition, the airline reassured Kenyans that all pilot licenses are issued by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), which also oversees their annual renewals.

The license is not renewed by the KCAA until after it has been determined that the pilot satisfies the necessary criteria in terms of their level of knowledge and experience.

The response from Kenya Airways comes at a time when the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has asked the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to examine the case of quack lawyer Brian Mwenda, who for years represented clients in court without holding a license. Kenya Airways’ actions came as a result of this directive.

According to accusations that have not been proven, Mwenda was successful in 26 cases while posing as an advocate.

These reports caught the attention of Eric Theuri, the President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), who labeled Mwenda as a fugitive who needs to be brought to justice.

In the meantime, Mike Sonko, who served as the former governor of Nairobi, has promised to rescue Mwenda financially and support him through law school so that he can resume his career.
