Kalonzo: Raila Odinga Changed Phone Number Amid Backlash from Gen Z Over Dialogue Proposal
Wiper party leader Raila Odinga has revealed that his Azimio La Umoja co-principal had to change his mobile phone number due to a backlash from the younger generation after he proposed dialogue with President William Ruto’s government.
This suggestion aimed at addressing the pressing issues of the youth was met with significant discontent.
Raila’s invitation to dialogue did not sit well with the local Gen Z population, who have recently shown an increasing willingness to voice their dissatisfaction with Ruto’s administration.
The younger generation, feeling betrayed by this move, saw it as a conciliatory gesture that did not align with their more radical stance against the current regime.
Consequently, this discontent quickly escalated into a social media storm, resulting in the public sharing of Raila’s personal phone number.
Amid this chaos, Kalonzo Musyoka, another senior leader in the Azimio La Umoja coalition, highlighted the extent of the issue.
He shared that Raila had been forced to turn off his phone and secure a new number due to the relentless barrage of messages and calls from the outraged public.
This incident underscores the significant pressure and scrutiny political figures face, especially from a digitally savvy and outspoken younger generation.
“I spoke to him (Raila)…People went to visit him yesterday, and he had to change his telephone number because Gen Z put the number everywhere,” said Kalonzo.
“This situation can be seen as a form of cyberbullying. It is crucial to show kindness and respect towards Baba. If such an invasion of privacy can happen to someone as prominent as Raila Odinga, it raises concerns about the safety and privacy of ordinary citizens in our country.”

This episode reflects the growing influence and boldness of the younger population in political discourse.
Their ability to mobilize and challenge established political figures through digital platforms signifies a shift in how political engagement and dissent are expressed.
The younger generation’s reaction to Raila’s proposition is a testament to their desire for more radical changes and their dissatisfaction with conventional political strategies.
Furthermore, this incident sheds light on the vulnerabilities that come with increased digital connectivity.
Public figures are more accessible than ever, but this accessibility can lead to privacy breaches and cyberbullying.
The case of Raila Odinga having to change his phone number illustrates a broader issue of how public discourse and political disagreements are being handled in the digital age.
It calls for a balance between openness and the protection of personal boundaries, emphasizing the need for respect and civility even in times of political disagreement.
