‘I Can’t Breathe’: Black Man Tells Police Before He Died, Video Shows
The Ohio police have released a video showing the death of a Black man, Frank Tyson, who passed away at a local hospital. In the footage, Tyson repeatedly tells officers “I can’t breathe” as they pinned him down and handcuffed him at a bar. This incident brings to mind the 2020 killing of George Floyd.
The Canton Police Department shared a 36-minute body camera video showing officers detaining Tyson, 53, who was suspected of fleeing the scene of a single-car accident on April 18. In the video, the officers approach Tyson at a tavern after the car accident and an altercation occurs. Tyson shouted phrases such as “They are trying to kill me” and “Call the sheriff” during the struggle.
Officers eventually wrestled Tyson to the ground and handcuffed him, placing a knee near his neck for about 30 seconds. Tyson repeatedly said, “I can’t breathe. I can’t… get off my neck,” while an officer told him to “Calm down” and “You’re fine.” Tyson then appears motionless and unresponsive on the floor for several minutes as officers speak with bar patrons.

Officers check on Tyson and notice he might not be breathing, prompting them to remove his handcuffs and start CPR. Paramedics arrive shortly afterward and take Tyson out on a stretcher to an ambulance.
Tyson’s death at the local hospital has not been confirmed by Reuters, and the official cause of death remains undetermined. The case is reminiscent of the killing of George Floyd in 2020, which sparked worldwide protests against police brutality and racism.
The officers involved in the incident, Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch, were placed on administrative leave. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (OCI) is investigating the incident, but calls to the OCI were not immediately returned.
