Heartbreaking Twist: Bride Calls Off Wedding 2 Weeks to Due Date After Fiancé Tests HIV Positive
A heartbroken woman has candidly shared her story about her first and only relationship, which ended in disappointment.
Mary Kitonga described herself as naive and innocent when she completed her secondary education.
She was a young believer trying to figure out her path in life before entering university.
Why did Kitonga move to Nakuru?
In an interview with TUKO.co.ke, Kitonga explained that she enrolled in a teaching course, despite not wanting to become a teacher.
“I became passionate about God and salvation after giving my life to Christ in secondary school. My relationship with Him grew stronger, and I felt His guidance in my life. I made a vow to not engage in any relationships unless they were leading to marriage. I wanted to remain pure for my future husband.
Around that time, a friend’s mother was helping young children in Nakuru and asked me to accompany her from Nairobi since I wasn’t doing much. I agreed because I saw it as part of my service to the Lord,” she shared.
What work did Kitonga’s boyfriend do?
Kitonga settled into her new environment, helping to take care of the children and support the family.
One day, while sitting alone, a young man approached her and asked her to walk with him.
“He was a hawker, selling biscuits and other items. I hesitated initially because I was waiting for my friend, but he convinced me it wouldn’t take long. We agreed to walk together as he promised it would be brief.
He opened up about his academic and personal life, and I could tell he was very genuine,” she recalled.
What was Kitonga’s relationship end goal?
Kitonga mentioned that they exchanged numbers and promised to stay in touch.
“When I returned to Nairobi, he visited the city to buy supplies for his business. We met occasionally in public places like gardens. He was always respectful and never acted inappropriately. He was my first love, and it was my first relationship.
When I asked him about his intentions, he said he wanted us to be friends and eventually marry. I told him I was fresh out of school and not ready to settle down. He said he would wait for me,” she stated.
Why couldn’t Kitonga break up with her lover?
Their love deepened, and they even informed their families about their intentions for accountability.
Kitonga recalled having doubts about the relationship at one point but couldn’t find a valid reason to leave, noting that she saw no red flags.
“We had a pre-wedding ceremony at both our places, which took two days over the weekend, two weeks before the wedding. Everything was set, and everyone was excited. However I remembered the importance of an HIV test. I trusted myself and him, thinking the results would be fine,” she said.
Why was Kitonga shocked by her lover’s HIV status?
They received counseling before taking the test and were prepared for the results.
Kitonga’s results were negative, but her fiancé tested positive.
“I was shocked because he never disclosed his status. I don’t know if it was ignorance on his part or negligence on mine. The doctor advised us to return the next day for confirmation,” she said.
Kitonga’s husband-to-be takes a second test
Kitonga confronted her fiancé, asking why his test was positive and what could have happened, but he had no explanation.
The next day, he went for another test alone, hoping for a positive result.
“He told me, ‘It was just like yesterday.’ That statement broke me,” Kitonga painfully recounted.
Kitonga pressured to proceed with the wedding
They visited a counselor who tried to persuade them to continue with their wedding plans, but Kitonga felt uneasy.
She claimed she was pressured to proceed, despite others facing similar issues.
“I felt pressured, so I left Nakuru and returned to Nairobi to avoid the wedding day. I was mocked and called names for my decision but was uncomfortable. I returned all the money contributed because I didn’t want to owe anyone,” she recounted.
Man calls off wedding over lover’s expensive gift
In another story, a man called off his wedding after his fiancée refused to disclose who gifted her an iPhone 13 Pro Max.
The groom-to-be confronted her about the costly gift, but she refused to reveal the giver’s identity.
This led the young man to cancel the wedding to prevent future issues in their relationship.
