Government Set to Disburse 2022 KNEC Examiner Payments
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced this week that the government will begin paying the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) examiners for the 2022 exams.
Speaking on Saturday at Kangaru School in Manyatta Constituency, Embu County, during the inaugural Education Day, area MP Gitonga Mukunji announced that Ksh.2 billion has been set aside to resolve the debts of KNEC examiners, contracted officials, and suppliers.
Machogu stated that in the future, his ministry will prioritize prompt payment to examiners to ensure that such delays do not reoccur.
“Walimu wetu ambao tunatumia kuwa examiners katika mitihani yetu ya kitaifa najua tulichelewa kidogo kulipa pesa yao wale walitusaidia national marking ya 2022 lakini sasa kupitia kwa mheshimiwa rais tumepewa billion mbili kutoka next week mimi nitawalipa wote,” he said.
In addition, CS Machogu stated that they have begun paying the Ksh.2.5 billion owed to contractors who constructed Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) classes beginning last week.
To reduce the student-teacher ratio, the ministry will hire an additional 25,000 teachers this fiscal year, bringing the total number of teachers employed to a total of 50,000.
“…we were able to hire 36,000 teachers for the first time in many years during the last fiscal year.” This year alone, the government will hire 24,000 teachers, a quantity we haven’t seen in a long time. This is due to the president’s ability to recognize that we need sufficient teachers to continue providing quality education,” the Education CS added.
Manyatta Member of Parliament Gitonga Mukunji and other leaders in attendance lauded the program as a game-changer for shaping the future career trajectories of the youth.
“Another initiative slated to launch shortly is the digitization of our schools. Nataka kuhakikisha kila day secondary school iko na computer na wototo wanaweza kutumia computers mapema,” Mukunji added.
