Gachagua Allies To Nyoro: Deputy President is Mt. Kenya Supremo
The rivalry for dominance in Mt Kenya and the claim to be the political leader poised to succeed President William Ruto escalated on Friday as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro engaged in a heated battle, with certain Members of Parliament throwing their support behind the Deputy President.
To respond to Nyoro’s recent gathering in Murang’a, Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi convened a meeting at Karatina Stadium last week. During this gathering, he united several MPs aligned with the Deputy President, expressing their support for him.
The conflict between Nyoro and Gachagua’s followers erupted right after the 2022 elections, maintaining an electoral atmosphere in the region for the four years leading up to the 2027 election.
Certain individuals are competing for the opportunity to assume leadership in the Mt Kenya region, aiming to succeed former President Uhuru Kenyatta and gain control over the significant voting bloc in the area. This holds strategic importance for influencing national politics.
Besides Nyoro and Gachagua, there are other prominent figures believed to be potential leaders for the Mt Kenya region, including Kithure Kindiki, who serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Coordination, Moses Kuria, a Cabinet Secretary, and opposition leader Martha Karua.
Nyoro’s backers, spearheaded by Senator Joe Nyutu from Murang’a, advocate for his selection as President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 elections. This development has sparked speculation, with some curious about the forces driving this initiative. Gachagua, in response, has shrugged off his challengers, stating that it is premature to commence campaigning at this point.

Last Friday, Senator Wahome Wamatinga of Nyeri expressed that Gachagua holds the highest political position in Mt Kenya, emphasizing unity in the region without internal conflicts. He asserted that everyone in the area would rally behind Gachagua, urging other leaders to be patient and await their turn for support.
He added: “The political bickering you are hearing is friendly fire. This does not mean there is a political supremacy battle in Mt Kenya region.”
Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina said: “It is not in dispute that Rigathi Gachagua is the Deputy President of Kenya. However, we have a lot of problems we are supposed to solve before 2027 and we should desist from early campaigns. We love all our leaders and we shall continue praying for them. We thank the President for mentoring many leaders from Mt Kenya region.”
Kiambu Woman Rep Ann Wamuratha said: “We shall continue supporting the deputy president because he is currently the only senior person in government from this region.”
At the launch of an educational program aimed at reducing fees for day secondary school students to just Sh1,000, with the National Government Constituency Development Fund covering the remaining costs, speakers rallied behind Wamumbi. They encouraged the community to endorse and re-elect him for a second term in 2027.
Nandi Woman Representative Cynthia Muge criticized the judiciary for meddling in the execution of government initiatives. Additionally, the leaders expressed their backing for President Ruto’s endeavors to eliminate corruption within the judiciary.
Other MPs present were Kabete MP James Kamau, Oljoro-orok MP Michael Muchira, Irene Njoki (Bahati), Gachoki Gitari (Kirinyaga Central), and John Kaguchia (Mukurwe-ini). Laikipia Woman Representative Jane Kagiri and EALA MP Maina Karobia were also present.
