Fake News! EAC Secretariat Rubbishes Reports On New Regional Currency Named ‘Sheafra’

The EAC secretariat has dismissed claims suggesting the creation of a common currency for the East African Community called the Shilling of East Africa and Franc (SHEAFRA).

This after a fake account on X named Government of East Africa shared on Saturday the specimen of a 5 SHEAFRA note saying “The East African Sheafra of SHF.5 Currency Note of fuv5 has finally Landed”.

The statement mentioned that the currency is expected to strengthen the local economy, and one unit of SHEAFRA will have a value of $0.76.

The post that raised eyebrows prompted a flurry of inquiries, with numerous users expressing doubts about its authenticity and questioning the criteria used to select the name for the currency.

The so-called ‘East African government’ continued a relentless spree of sharing the message, accompanied by various captions, each provoking a diverse range of responses.

Another one read: “The East African Sheafra is a God Chosen Currency, let’s bear with it and embrace it, for with God, we do operate in his Wisdom, knowledge, and Understanding. Let’s give God a chance to lead so that we may not delay.”

On Monday morning, the East African Community (EAC) countered the widely circulated discussion on the same platform, dismissing it as false and asserting that there is no existence of such a currency.

“The EAC Secretariat wishes to inform all our stakeholders that the Partner States’ journey to a single currency is still a work in progress. Kindly ignore any rumors circulating in social media on the unveiling of new banknotes for the region,” said EAC.
