Education Ministry Reschedules Midterm Dates: June 27 – July 1, 2023

The Ministry of Education rescheduled the midterm dates from Tuesday, June 27, to Saturday, July 1, 2023, on Thursday, June 22.

A petition from the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) led to the modification.

Originally, all public school students were to take a midterm break from Thursday, June 29, to Sunday, July 2, for the second semester.

Principal Secretary of Education Belio Kipsang urged school administrators to take note of the modifications.

Indimuli Kahi, chair of KESSHA, had requested the date changes in his petition, citing the association’s 46th National Conference.

Kipsang emphasized the significance of the conference, noting that it allowed school administrators to evaluate and propose modifications to school operations.

The Ministry published the academic year’s calendar on January 10, 2023, outlining crucial dates.

The second term will run from May 8, 2023, until August 11, 2023. The students will then take a two-week summer vacation from August 12 to August 27, 2023. The third term will begin on August 28, 2023, and end on October 27, 2023.

The students will then take a ten-week break between October 28, 2023, and January 8, 2024 (third term holiday).

Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) will take place from 30 October to 2 November 2023.

In contrast, Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) students will sit for examinations from November 3 to November 24, 2023. Later, from November 27, 2023, to December 15, 2023, marking will begin.

On Friday, June 16, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu modified the scheduled teaching times, specifying that classes should begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:45 p.m.

The CS instructed school administrators to ensure that teaching hours total six hours.

He noted that the allocated time was sufficient for effective learning and provided students with ample time to read independently and participate in extracurricular activities.
