Chaos Erupts as MP Didmus Barasa Silenced at Funeral Over Controversial Speech
Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa faced significant opposition and disruption while attempting to give a speech at a funeral in the Bumula constituency on April 27.
The lawmaker took the podium and immediately criticized one of the relatives of the deceased academic, Innocent Sangura.
Barasa accused the deceased’s uncle of neglecting his responsibility to employ his community members despite his position of influence and means.
Barasa referenced a report indicating that Education CS Ezekiel Machogu had been employing people from his community, which Barasa found acceptable in principle.
However, he argued that it was problematic when local figures like Sangura, who had the resources and influence, failed to employ their people.
This critique provoked a strong reaction from the crowd, with a portion of the mourners leaving their seats and moving towards Barasa in protest.
The mourners expressed their displeasure with Barasa’s comments, accusing him of inappropriately criticizing those in mourning.
They shut him down with loud heckling and noise, insisting that he should not speak in such a manner during the funeral.

One mourner declared that Barasa could not attack someone who was grieving for their deceased family member.
As the mourners grew increasingly agitated and approached Barasa at the podium, he appeared to be overwhelmed by their response.
The situation escalated quickly, but area MP Jack Wamboka intervened to help defuse the tension.
Wamboka’s efforts to calm the situation were crucial in restoring order, as Barasa’s security team worked to ensure his safety and quickly escorted him away from the funeral.
The incident highlighted the challenges of addressing sensitive issues such as employment and community representation during a funeral.
Barasa’s attempt to address these matters led to a confrontation with the mourners, who felt his comments were inappropriate given the context of the event.
Ultimately, Barasa’s speech was cut short due to the strong reaction from the audience and the need to prioritize the respectful conduct of the funeral proceedings.
