Azimio Pursues Justice for Brutalized Protestors

The Azimio coalition announced on Friday, July 28, that it has begun amassing evidence against police officers accused of brutalizing protesters during anti-government demonstrations. This is in preparation for instituting legal action.

The opposition leaders, led by Otiende Amollo, a member of parliament from Rarieda, and Opondo Kaluma, a member of parliament from Homabay Town, stated that they had assembled an experienced and competent legal team to collect evidence of what they deemed the excessive use of force by the security agencies.

During a memorial service for the victims, the legislators stated that their legal team is presently gathering evidence to build a bulletproof case.

After making this disclosure, the legislators visited Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital to speak with the victims and their families.

In addition, a few of the leaders contributed funds to help the victims mitigate their medical expenses and purchase essential household items.
Back in Nairobi, the Azimio Principals, commanded by Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka, held a memorial service in memory of the protesters who lost their lives.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta accompanied the two leaders. The ceremony took place in the Stephen Kalonzo Command Centre in Karen.

In his speech, former vice president Kalonzo Musyoka expressed regret for the brutality against protestors and disclosed that the coalition would move forward with plans to pursue justice for the victims.

“We stand in solidarity with those who perished. The lives we lost were unnecessary. Those who were injured did not deserve this fate. They only sought a reduction in the price of essential commodities. The victims could not overthrow the government. They only lacked fundamentals.” Kalonzo remarked.

The leader of the Wiper Party also praised police officers across the nation for their restraint during the protests.

“They may not be the majority, but we applaud them nonetheless. As we attempt to make sense of senseless tragedies, we must consider whether Article 37 is merely meaningless words. Has Kenya Kwanza suspended the constitution?”

Azimio had previously urged all Kenyans to maintain peace during the nationwide liturgies and to turn out in large numbers to honor the victims of police brutality.

“We would like to take this early opportunity to thank everyone who came out yesterday to maintain vigil, light candles, and lay flowers in memory of the deceased and injured. Azimio stated at the time that this exercise would continue through the weekend.
