Three Arrested in Connection with Magunas Supermarket Arson and Looting During Saba Saba Protests

Police in Meru have arrested three people linked to the arson and looting of businesses during the July 7, 2025, Saba Saba protests.

The arrests came after a thorough investigation that involved reviewing CCTV footage and gathering intelligence. The suspects were reportedly seen on security cameras setting fire to Magunas Supermarket and breaking into both Seven Eleven Lounge and Selelite Supermarket. Authorities say they also stole items during the chaos.

โ€œA coordinated operation by Meru police led to the arrest of three suspects believed to be behind the burning of Magunas Supermarket. CCTV shows them looting and setting fire to the supermarket, as well as raiding Seven Eleven Lounge and Selelite Supermarket,โ€ part of a police statement read.

As part of the investigation, officers recovered a dark green motorcycle with registration number KMGN 839F, suspected to have been used in the crimes. The motorcycle is now being held as evidence.

The suspects are currently in police custody and will be taken to court soon. Police say they are working to find and arrest more people involved in the attacks.

Authorities have vowed to restore order and hold all those responsible for the violence and destruction accountable.

The July 7 Saba Saba protests saw large crowds of demonstrators flood Meruโ€™s Makutano area, disrupting services and making it difficult for emergency crews to operate.

One of the most dramatic moments came when a Meru County fire engine sent to put out the supermarket fire was attacked with stones by protesters after it ran out of water. A Kenya Red Cross vehicle offering medical help was also damaged in the chaos.

The Magunas Supermarket incident has been described as the worst business attack in Meru during the protests, though similar events were reported in other counties.

In Kirinyaga, protesters smashed the windows of Nice Supermarket, causing significant damage. In Nakuru, a group attempted to loot a supermarket but were stopped by police in time.
