Atwoli Calls for President Ruto to Axe Treasury CS Ndung’u

Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), has urged for the dismissal of National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u due to his statement suggesting that the government doesn’t have sufficient funds to support crucial public spending.

Addressing a gathering in Kisumu over the weekend, Atwoli strongly criticized the Cabinet Secretary for allegedly inducing fear among Kenyans. He emphasized that a crucial aspect of the CS’s role is to devise strategies for generating revenue to aid the government.

Atwoli expressed the view that Prof Ndung’u, in his role as the head of the Treasury, ought to embody hope for the Kenyan populace and articulate strategies aimed at reviving the economy.

The head of COTU observed that the nation is currently facing challenging economic conditions, emphasizing that it falls upon the CS to seek resolutions rather than appearing incapable or powerless.

He highlighted what he claimed were unused resources, such as Lake Victoria, suggesting that the country could generate significant revenue, possibly billions of shillings, by deploying cruise ships to explore the area.

Atwoli said: “You have asked us to pay for housing levy, where are those houses? You have asked us to pay more taxes, and KRA is on our necks, where is this money going? We know we have external debts calculate and let us know if Ndung’u comes out with the report…not to cry the way he was crying…’ this government is broken, I cannot even be able to pay salaries…we’re struggling…’”

If I was (President William) Ruto I will sack him the following day, I will sack him! Because yeye ndio mama, anaambia Watoto eti sasa hii nyumba sijui mtakula nini…you’re instilling fear!”

Atwoli’s comments follow Prof. Ndung’u’s recent appearance before the National Assembly’s finance committee, where he mentioned that the government encountered difficulties in collecting revenue. This issue has impacted salary payments and the allocation of the NG-CDF.

“NG-CDF will be released as soon as the government has enough funds, at the moment we are not getting taxes as required and the government is having challenges paying salaries, so please bear with us, we are working around the clock to make things work,” Ndung’u told legislators on December 6, 2023.

“We are doing everything possible to ensure the disbursement of CDF funds no matter how little we can.”
