50-Year-Old Man Allegedly Defrauded and Assaulted by Company Directors in Relocation Scam
On April 15, 2024, a 50-year-old chef was tricked and attacked in Malindi by the directors of a company that also operates as a travel agency.
A man, whose identity has been concealed due to the delicate nature of the situation, explained that his troubles started when he initially engaged with the company’s directors following their presentation at a hotel in Nyahururu, Nyandarua County.
In their presentation, the company representatives highlighted their 11 years of experience in helping migrants move to Canada.
The man was so persuaded by the pitch that he agreed to proceed with the immigration process.
As per the human rights organization Usikimye, which initially posted the information online, the victim sold land to obtain Ksh250,000 in agency fees required for the relocation.
He eventually covered the fees after being offered a sous chef role in an unspecified hotel in Canada. His application for this position was reportedly successful.
On the critical day when he was scheduled to move to Canada, the directors met him at a bus station in Malindi on April 16.

On the day in question, everything seemed normal. He was guided to the back seat, and his items were stowed in the trunk.
The victim described being given apple juice from a sealed carton, which he consumed before becoming sleepy and passing out.
He eventually regained consciousness in a field in Malindi called Uwanja wa Ndege, where he was discovered without pants and suffering from intense pain in his head and lower body.
A medical report from Malindi General Hospital verified that he had been drugged and sexually assaulted.
“’He was admitted to the hospital – unfortunately, due to the doctor’s strike, he was discharged, given diapers and painkillers. The medics referred him to Usikimye”’, stated the reports.
The news arrives amid reports of another person staying at a travel agency in Nairobi on April 17, insisting on the return of funds they had paid to the agency.
After receiving complaints, officers from the DCI conducted a raid on the agency, seizing computers and documents from the organization’s premises.
