Wheel of Fortune: Businessman Robbed of Ksh1 Million by Driver, Dumped in the Dark
Meru businessman Mike Mutembei, commonly known as Makarina, has made a plea for assistance in locating a driver who allegedly stole Ksh800,000 in cash from him and his phone valued at Ksh220,000 as they were departing from the Meru Night event.
Expressing his deep concern, the politically inclined businessman disclosed on Sunday morning that the driver absconded with the money and his phone, leaving him stranded in a moving vehicle. Makarina, who lives with a disability, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “My driver just stole over 800K (Kenya shillings) from me (a phone) worth 220K (Kenya shillings) on our way from Meru Night.”
In a harrowing revelation, he recounted being abandoned in the vehicle while it was in motion, an experience that nearly cost him his life. Urging the public to be vigilant, he implored, “Anyone who will come across him report to the nearest police station.”

Addressing his substantial online following of over 300,000 individuals, Makarina detailed how the driver abruptly left him stranded on the roadside before pilfering funds from his various financial accounts. “My driver has left me in the middle of the road, disappeared with my phone, cash that was in the vehicle, and withdrawn money from various mobile money accounts,” he lamented.
The full extent of the stolen money and goods remains undetermined. Moreover, it remains unclear whether the businessman has reported the incident to the authorities and the current status of any investigations.
Widely recognized as one of the wealthiest individuals from Meru County, Makarina has been associated with supporting the political endeavors of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. His involvement in contributing to Raila’s political campaigns has been noted in previous reports. Additionally, he has served as the chairman of the influential Kenya Miraa Farmers and Traders Association, attributing his backing of Raila to the perceived failure of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration in revitalizing the Miraa industry.
In a statement made in 2018, Makarina emphasized his altruistic endeavors, stating, “I have been helping people for free and I don’t seek any elective post. All I want is to educate Kenyans, especially our Meru people.” Furthermore, he has played a role as a patron of the Africa Disabled Network, showcasing his commitment to various community causes.
