Wetangula Demands Ruto Government to Revise CBC: Revealing the Reasons Behind

On Sunday, June 11, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula signaled the beginning of the process to modify the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in response to public concerns.

Wetangula disclosed during a church service in Elgeyo Marakwet County that he had asked President William Ruto’s administration to consider ways to incorporate public opinion into the implementation of the program.

While he did not advocate for the curriculum’s complete abolition, he emphasized that it must undergo significant modifications.

“Today, I requested that the government review the new CBC education system to ensure its effective implementation.

The former senator from Bungoma stated, “I asked the government to prioritize discussing issues raised by the public on CBC during cabinet meetings.”

Explaining the need for a curriculum review, the speaker argued that education is a dynamic and ongoing process, and as such, the government should take into account issues raised by all sector stakeholders.

The new system is beneficial and its proponents have good intentions for shaping the future of our youth and advancing the nation.

Wetangula defended the system while calling for modifications, arguing that the government should be sensitive to Kenyans’ concerns regarding its implementation.

However, he lamented that the previous administration’s implementation of the current system was not user-friendly.

Ruto appointed a Working Party on Education Reform task force on September 30, 2022, via a Gazette Notice, to evaluate the CBC in the country.

The Gazette Notice stated in part, “The task force will cause and conduct a summative evaluation of CBC and assess and recommend an appropriate structure for its implementation.”

The President extended the term of the task force until Monday, June 12, 2023, in April 2023.

Ruto explained that in addition to evaluating the assessment of learners, the quality assurance, and the standards of CBC, the task force would also examine the deployment of teachers.

The President directed the task force to examine the technology for curriculum delivery, improved learning outcomes, and education management, public school categorization policies and their implications for access, transition, and cost.
