Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has obtained a court order to suspend the bank accounts and assets of the former governor of Kiambu and his family, Ferdinand Waititu.

EACC disclosed on Saturday that the court has frozen Waititu and his wife Susan Wangari’s accounts due to allegations of corruption.

The court ruled this week that the former county administrator is responsible for the Ksh580 million tender scandal.

EACC Chairperson David Oginde gives a speech during the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) report on corruption in the healthcare sector in Nairobi on May 17, 2023.

“In addition, EACC has since obtained orders from the High Court freezing the family’s unexplained wealth amounting to nearly Ksh2 billion pending the ongoing civil suit seeking orders for forfeiture of the said assets to the State,” EACC stated.

At the same time, the High Court discovered that eight additional suspects with whom Waititu was charged must also stand trial.

The eleven defendants are accused of committing a variety of crimes in Kiambu County, where Waititu served for more than three years.

The suspects are charged with conflict of interest, illegal acquisition of public property, and possession of suspect property.

The couple is accused of using their positions to award contracts to companies in which they had a financial interest and then accepting bribes from these companies.

Additionally, they are accused of laundering criminal proceeds.

“In the previous quarter, an additional file was forwarded to the DPP recommending prosecution of Ferdinand Waititu, his spouse, and their daughter for embezzlement of public funds in Kiambu County,” the EACC statement read in parts.

Waititu and his wife could face many years of imprisonment if convicted. The trial is still ongoing, with no verdict yet rendered.

EACC also assured the suspects of a fair trial, emphasizing that they are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
