The National Police Service has come under criticism following the shooting of K24 TV journalist Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki.

Wanjeri was among hundreds of journalists who took to the streets on Tuesday, July 16, to cover the anti-government protests.

However, the budding scribe sustained a gunshot wound to her left thigh, prompting an urgent transfer to Valley Hospital for medical treatment.

The journalist, dressed in press attire, was standing by the roadside when police reportedly fired bullets at her.

An amateur video captured the moment an unidentified officer shot her, causing her to fall in pain as concerned onlookers gathered to comfort and assist her.

What happened before Wanjeri’s shooting

A new clip has since surfaced on social media, showing moments leading up to the shooting that sparked public outrage.

The journalist was captured speaking to a female police officer in their van while holding a tube of toothpaste.

Visibly overwhelmed by the effects of the teargas, Wanjeri handed the officer some of the toothpaste as her colleague asked what they were doing.

Kenyans react to Wanjeri helping police

Given that she was shot moments after her humanitarian gesture, social media users have accused the police of being ungrateful.

@CaptWanderiCFE:
“Then the same police shot her, a record 4 (four) times & the County Commander Nakuru County is still in office? The lack of accountability on the part of elected & appointed officials is the reason Kenya is not progressing as fast as it should. #WanjeriKariuki deserves Justice!?

@sagarakelvin2:
“She is a good journalist. That police who shot her should suffer for the rest of his life.”

@GovDrill:
“We are peaceful. This is a perfect depiction of how the government and police are the problem.”

@Enlightened254:
“The police are rogue. They are similar to the colonial police force.”
