UDA Senator Protests Eviction Of 100,000 Residents For Ruto’s Housing Project In Trans Nzoia
Numerous individuals in Trans Nzoia County are facing significant setbacks as their residences were dismantled on Friday, February 2, to make room for President William Ruto’s initiative in affordable housing.
The controlled demolitions overseen by the police resulted in widespread devastation, leaving more than 100,000 individuals without homes, as reported by County Senator Allan Chesang, a strong supporter of Ruto.
When discussing the issue, the young senator criticized both the County and National governments for failing to offer alternative land to the displaced individuals.
The legislator from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) contended that the government should have given precedence to compensating the victims before carrying out mandatory evictions.
To address the harm, he suggested that the government engage in negotiations with residents who were open to discussion, as the potential demolition of properties could lead to a crisis and the displacement of residents.
“I want to plead with the government on behalf of Trans-Nzoia people living in government land. It is painful that the government that the people of Trans Nzoia County voted in is chasing them from their land. These are people that bought land from other people,” grieved Senator Allan Chesang.
“The government has brought an army that has never been seen in this area. These soldiers are marking the beacons and chasing away the residents. It is against my wish,” Chesang lamented.

The demolitions impacted various facilities, including schools and hospitals. Chesang emphasized that the Cherangani Level 4 hospital, which catered to a large population, was also demolished, affecting thousands of residents.
He encouraged Ruto to reconsider his instruction, pay a visit to the region, and attentively address the authentic grievances of the impacted residents.
“Families have laid their loved ones to rest on this land. The notion of exhuming bodies is both distressing and morally challenging. I urge His Excellency to consider the precedents set by other governments, avoiding the drastic step of demolishing properties,” he pleaded.
Yet, he accused Governor George Natembeya of Trans Nzoia County of endorsing the demolitions instead of presenting more effective alternatives for the residents left in distress.
“I want to plead with the County Government and National Government. We support the government on this project but not on its position of evicting people from this land,” the Trans Nzoia County legislator added.
“It is not right, my conscience does not allow what is happening, and my people are not at peace. To be very honest, we should have a different approach.”
