UDA Reveals Next Strategy After Gen Z Finance Bill Demonstrations

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA), represented by Secretary General Cleophas Malala, announced on Sunday that a meeting will be arranged between President William Ruto and Gen Z protesters.

Malala’s statement came shortly after President Ruto expressed his willingness to engage in dialogue with the demonstrators.

The ruling party shifted its stance after initially dismissing the youth protesting against the Finance Bill 2024, which proposes an annual tax increase of Ksh300 billion.

Acknowledging the youth’s concerns, Malala emphasized their significant turnout in Nairobi and indicated a change in perspective.

“As Secretary General of UDA, I believe these Gen Zs deserve a chance to meet with the President, as he holds his position largely because of their support,” he elaborated.

Malala asserted that it was only fair for the youth to be heard and their grievances addressed.

He highlighted that President William Ruto would attentively listen to the youth and address the issues they raised during the planned meeting.

Furthermore, he called on Inspector General Japhet Koome to ensure the youth were not harassed during their peaceful demonstrations.

“We must respect and listen to them. The police should not harm or shoot these young people,” he stated.

Regarding the meeting’s timing, Malala mentioned that he was seeking the right moment to facilitate it.

Speaking in Nyahururu on Sunday, Ruto expressed his admiration for the youth protesting the Finance Bill his administration had prepared.

Urging an end to the demonstrations, he conveyed his concern for Gen Z and a desire to resolve the raised issues amicably.
