According to a national survey conducted by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada), Western Kenya has the highest prevalence of alcoholism in Kenya.

The survey released on Monday, September 11 revealed that the Western region has the highest alcohol consumption rate at 26.4 percent, followed by the Coast region with a rate of 13.9 percent. Central Kenya finished in third place with a rate of 12.8%.

Again, the Western region led in the consumption of Chang’aa, a traditional spirit produced from the fermentation of grains such as millet, with a rate of 11.4 percent, followed by Nyanza at 6.3 percent. The Rift Valley region ranked third with a 3.6% consumption rate.

In terms of consumption of traditional brews, the Western region leads the country with a rate of 12.9%, followed by the Coast region with 7.9%, and Nyanza in third place with a rate of 2.2%.

The survey revealed that Nairobi has the highest prevalence of legal alcohol consumption with a rate of 10.3 percent, followed by Central with 10.0 percent and Eastern with 8.8 percent.

Notably, NACADA revealed that alcohol is the most abused substance in Kenya at present.

One in eight Kenyans between the ages of 15 and 65 is currently using alcohol.

According to the survey, the total number of alcohol consumers in the country is 3,199,119.

According to NACADA, more males (2,511,763) than females (687,355) are currently consuming alcohol within the same age demographic.

NACADA disclosed in its survey that it was able to monitor reliable estimates of drug and substance use at the national, regional, and urban/rural levels due to the use of a cross-sectional study design.

โ€œThe survey was conducted in selected clusters spread across the 47 counties of the Republic of Kenya,โ€ the survey stated.

โ€œThe study sampled Kenyans aged 15 to 65 years. The sample for the survey was obtained from the Kenya a Household Master Sample Frame (K-HMSF) maintained by the KNBS.โ€
