In that year, the average alcohol consumption was 0.81 liters of beer, 0.81 liters of spirits, 0.04 liters of wine, and 0.03 liters of other forms of alcohol.

Although Kenya’s alcohol consumption in 2019 was relatively high at 2.9 liters per capita, it paled in comparison to Uganda, where the average per capita consumption was 12.2 liters.

    The disease of alcoholism

In its ongoing endeavor to combat alcoholism, the government is intensifying its crackdown on illegal alcohol sales and consumption outside of legal hours.

To achieve this objective, Vice President Rigathi Gachagua is conducting a targeted campaign in the Mt Kenya region.

According to the most recent data from the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA), approximately 1 in 8 Kenyans aged 15 to 65 consume alcohol, totaling 3,199,119 individuals.

NACADA Chairperson Stephen Kiptoem Mairori addressing the press on September 8, 2023.
