Tanzania’s Foreign Minister Speaks After Being Caught Amidst Nairobi Protests During Embassy Construction Launch
Tanzanian Foreign Minister January Makamba experienced the hustle and bustle of Nairobi City on Tuesday, June 18, due to protests against Finance Bill 2024.
Makamba was in Nairobi with his delegation to initiate the construction of a twin-tower building that will serve as the Tanzanian embassy in Kenya.
He informed reporters that he was aware of the planned protests in Nairobi but proceeded with his trip nonetheless.
“It is quite an eventful day in Nairobi, from the commotion we see in town,” he commented on the chaos within the city.
Despite staying composed, he mentioned that his team had concerns and considered canceling the visit earlier.
Makamba emphasized that he respected the right to protest, which influenced his decision to proceed with the trip.

“We believe that expressing our differences and opinions can coexist with progress,” he stated.
While witnessing the protests, Makamba remained safe from any danger.
He addressed journalists from Upper Hill Nairobi, the future site of the new building.
Earlier, President William Ruto had noted that it was beneficial for democracy when Kenyans scrutinized their leaders’ policies.
“We are glad we are having conversations about issues, and our institutions are working,” he said.
Despite the President’s reassurance, numerous activists were arrested for participating in peaceful protests in the Central Business District (CBD).
