Ruto’s Lawyer Accuses Raila Before ICC

A lawyer who represented President William Ruto during the August 2022 Presidential Election Petition has requested that the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigate and prosecute Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga for ongoing anti-government demonstrations.

On Friday, July 28, Adrian Kamotho, representing Victims of Maandamano Insurgents (VMI), asserted that his clients bore the brunt of crimes committed by demonstrators.

In a letter to ICC Prosecutor General Karim Khan, Kamotho asserted that the anti-government demonstrations were fueled by violence, vandalism, looting, terror, and property devastation.

“We are instructed to respectfully bring to your attention grave humanitarian atrocities and war crimes committed against our clients that fall within the scope of your mandate as outlined by the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, which among other things grants the ICC unfettered jurisdiction about crimes of international concern, in addition to national criminal jurisdictions.

“Our clients are persuaded that the time has come for the Office of the Prosecutor to take decisive steps by Article 15 of the Rome Statute to redress grave humanitarian violations and war crimes being committed with impunity by former prime minister Hon. Raila Odinga,” Kamotho pleaded.

In addition, he accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta of refusing to step down and engaging in extreme political fervor.

Kamotho pleaded with Khan to unearth the alleged malice concealed by the Handshake brothers towards the Republic of Kenya, arguing that they concocted their nefarious schemes after losing the August 2022 Presidential Election to William Ruto.

“After the conclusion of the transition, Kenya enjoyed an extraordinary period of calm and tranquility. In the days that followed, however, our clients assert that the Honorable Raila Amollo Odinga of the Azimio Coalition, in conjunction with the Honorable Uhuru Kenyatta, the chairman of said Coalition, launched a vicious campaign of hatred, disinformation, propaganda, incitement, and violence against the legally established Government of the Republic of Kenya.

“Our client is astounded by the callousness with which Odinga and Kenyatta continue to sponsor a wave of terror and lethal violence against innocent citizens and law enforcement agencies,” the letter stated in part.

Kamotho requested that the ICC monitor the situation in Kenya and be prepared to intervene if necessary.

A few days after Operation Linda Ugatuzi reported President William Ruto, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, and Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to the Hague, the attorney drafted a letter to ICC counsel Karim Khan.

Thursday, July 20, Linda Ugatuzi accused the trio of crimes against humanity and urged the International Criminal Court to investigate and prosecute them for the destruction of property and deaths of innocent civilians.
