Ruto Reveals Officials Earning Beyond His Ksh 1.4M Salary

President William Ruto exposed a pervasive vice in government on Wednesday, August 16, in which senior managers pay themselves higher salaries than those established by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

Speaking at the 8th Devolution Conference in Uasin Gishu County, the Head of State questioned why some government officials earn more than his Ksh1.4 million salary, disclosing that this practice is most prevalent in government parastatals.

He emphasized that even institutional leaders, such as university vice-chancellors, have been found to receive higher salaries than he does.

According to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), the president holds the highest-paid position among government employees, with a monthly salary of Ksh 1,443,750. This amount does not include specific benefits, such as inpatient health coverage valued at Ksh 10 million, among others.

Ruto’s disclosure sheds light on the extent of malfeasance among certain civil servants, some of whom earn over Ksh 16.8 million per year.

“You ever wonder what these individuals are doing that is so monumental. We are going to have a conversation about this,” he stated.

Ruto refrained, however, from naming the specific individuals who had exceeded the SRC’s salary recommendations.

As a result, the President reaffirmed his dedication to eradicating this impunity, which he emphasized has detrimental effects on the character of public service.

“Anyone implicated in the loss of public funds, whether in the federal or county government, will face the full repercussions of their actions.” I expect the agencies to act swiftly to combat corruption,” he stated.

In June, President Ruto voiced his displeasure over the discovery that some state officials were bringing home more than Ksh2 million per month.

Regarding the affected universities, the Head of State stated that the Vice-Chancellors (VCs) collude with council leaders to increase their pay.
