President William Ruto received an urgent phone call on Saturday night from the administration of President Joe Biden concerning the worsening conditions in Haiti.

The Department of State released a statement on its website, disclosing that Secretary Antony Blinken placed a call addressing the ongoing political and security crisis in Haiti.

As the gangs persist in causing chaos in the Caribbean nation, both leaders concurred on the necessity for Kenya to send 1,000 police officers to the troubled region.

Furthermore, it was emphasized that other nations must commit to deploying their military forces as part of a Multinational Security Support Mission.

In the beginning, the guidelines for involvement dictated that Kenyan police would be responsible for protecting crucial government facilities such as airports, hospitals, and parliament.

Gangs have already seized control of significant structures, and Blinken emphasized that the Kenyan police will collaborate with Haiti’s security forces to establish the required security conditions for conducting elections that are both free and fair.

“Secretary Blinken also offered his appreciation for Kenya’s diplomatic work to support peace and security in the Horn of Africa,” the US stated.

Blinken issued his call on the same day as the reported incident of a fire at the Haitian interior ministry headquarters.

It was additionally stated that the gangs were planning to destroy the country’s Supreme Court.

Although the Biden administration has pledged financial support for Kenya’s undertaking in Haiti, Republicans have opposed this commitment.

The approval of a Ksh14 billion budget for the mission is pending, as the United States government awaits backing from Republican lawmakers.

On September 23, President Joe Biden committed to providing logistical, intelligence, communication, and medical assistance to support the Kenyan troops.
