Ruto, Raila talks team unveil order of priority on issues

Friday, the National Dialogue Committee voted to prioritize the re-establishment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in its deliberations.

Wiper leader and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition delegation head Kalonzo Musyoka stated that the committee’s initial focus will be on electoral justice and related issues.

According to a statement released by the committee on Wednesday, the panel will be discussing five broad issues.

The issue of electoral justice was placed second on the list.

The electoral justice agenda includes the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), the audit of the audit of the 2022 presidential election, and the delimitation of electoral boundaries.

”The NADCO this afternoon agreed on the order of priority that the issues tabled would be discussed,” Musyoka said in a statement on his social media platform X.

This means that the committee’s first order of business would be to determine whether the current selection panel for IEBC commissioners will continue its work or be disbanded.

The committee had already advertised for Kenyans to apply for the positions of IEBC commissioners and chairman.

Additionally, the dialogue committee can concur to reconstitute the selection panel.

The committee agreed on Friday that the broader issue of unresolved constitutional issues will be the second topic of discussion.

This agenda includes the implementation of the two-thirds rule, governance issues such as promoting national unity and inclusiveness in state appointments, and the implementation of sufficient checks and balances.

The other item on the second agenda is the issue of the cost of living, which the opposition insisted must take precedence in the negotiations.

According to Kalonzo, the third item on the agenda will address adherence to the Political Parties Act, Coalitions, and multiparty democracy laws.

The Opposition desires that the government respect political parties and cease recruiting their members.

The incorporation of funds into the Constitution, including the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and the National Government Affirmative Action Fund, will be discussed as the fourth agenda item.

The constitutionalization of the offices of the Leader of the Official Opposition and the Prime Cabinet Secretary is item number five on the agenda.

As negotiations take shape, the panel has called for public input on the five overarching issues.
