Ruto Directs CS Chirchir To Lower Electricity Prices After Cabinet Meeting

In an effort to increase the distribution of hydroelectric power, President William Ruto has instructed the Ministry of Energy to reduce the cost of electricity for Kenyans.

State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed reported on Monday, following a Cabinet meeting presided over by the Head of State, that hydro-generated power generation had increased by more than 20 percent.

This is due to the persistent heavy precipitation in numerous regions of the nation.

“Cabinet also directed the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy in consultation with all agencies within the sector to give priority to maximum production, uptake, and distribution of hydro-generated power,” stated Hussein Mohammed.

Additionally, the representative suggested that the allocation of electricity should mirror the consumer’s increased use of hydro-generated power and a reduction of diesel-generated power by 15 to 10 percent, which is regarded as more costly.

Kenyans have been confronted with escalating electricity expenses and a rising cost of living in recent months.

Hydroelectric power will experience a reduction in prices per token unit if impacted.

Mohamed also mentioned in his address that the Ruto administration had duly considered the warning issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department.

He additionally maintained that the Head of State’s declaration regarding the downgrade of El Nino to significant rainfall was the product of departmental communication.

“All Kenyans should exercise patience and caution while traveling, wait for storm waters to subside before attempting to cross roads, report any instances of flooding or landslides to the authorities, and strictly follow all guidelines issued by the government,” Hussein advised the public.

As a result, the Cabinet reached a decision to establish a Ksh7 billion contingency fund, which will be distributed to counties, in order to mitigate the impacts of El Nino.

It was reported that 38 municipalities are in the alert phase of El Nino, with over 35,000 people displaced and 76 fatalities.

In an earlier statement, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua argued that the allocation of additional funds by the National Government to counties in light of the persistent rainfall was not feasible.
