Ruto Chooses Kirubi In-Law Andrew Mukite for CBK Chair

President William Ruto appointed Andrew Mukite Musangi to lead the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Board of Directors on Thursday.

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula delivered the message in his address to the legislature.

“The President seeks the approval of the Parliament for the aforementioned nomination,” Wetangula said.

If confirmed, Mukite will replace Mohammed Nyaoga, a lawyer whose four-year term expired in June 2023. In addition, he will serve for four years, with the possibility of reappointment based on his performance.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) advertised the position at the end of May, seeking a candidate with at least ten years of experience in economics, banking, and finance, among other related fields.

PSC added that the new Chair will be responsible for formulating the country’s monetary policy and monitoring the performance of the bank’s governor while ensuring the prudent use of CBK’s allocated resources.

Mukite is an attorney and principal consultant with LJA Associates. He has also served as the chairman of The Public Procurement Oversight Authority and as a member of the boards of directors of several other enterprises.

The late billionaire Chris Kirubi’s son-in-law obtained a law degree from the University of Hull (UK) in 1993 and was enrolled in the bar in 1995.

In December 1998, Mukite established his own firm, Mukite Musangi & Company Advocates (MMC), which specialized in commercial and corporate law.

His areas of practice as an attorney include Dispute resolution, Banking and Finance Law, Conveyancing and Real Estate, Corporate and Commercial Law, Intellectual Property, Debt Recovery, Receivership, Bankruptcy, Insolvency, Employment, and Tax law.

In 2017, as Chairman of the Jubilee National Executive Board, Mukite played a crucial role in the campaign of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Mukite is wed to Kirubi’s only daughter, and the couple has been able to maintain a low profile.
