Rain-Soaked Mandera: 2,500+ Displaced by Flooding

Over 2,500 individuals have been compelled to vacate their residences in Mandera due to severe inundation caused by persistent heavy rainfall for over 36 hours; houses have been submerged and trees have been uprooted.

In addition to Mandera East, Mandera North, and Mandera South, the flooding has displaced approximately 100,000 households.

Roads have become impassable, businesses have ceased operations, and residential zones, most notably Darika Village in Khalalio, Mandera East, have been inundated with water, resulting in the forced relocation of a significant number of inhabitants.

Darika Village, located in Khalalio, has experienced the most severe consequences, including the destruction of numerous residences and livestock.

The inhabitants have been compelled to seek sanctuary on elevated terrain due to the total submersion of their village.

As a result of the disruptions to education caused by flooded roads and schools, students preparing for the forthcoming KCSE exams have also been impacted by the situation.

Educational institutions have been significantly impacted by the persistent rainfall and flooding, which have impeded the academic progress of local students and significantly impacted their learning.

Additionally, there have been reports of livestock losses, although the precise magnitude of these losses is still unknown, thereby adding to the complexity of the crisis.

In an effort to prevent the situation from deteriorating further, local leader Mohamed Yussuf has urged humanitarian organizations, such as the Kenya Red Cross, to intensify their rescue operations.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning that the heavy rainfall that has been observed in different parts of the country is likely to extend and worsen in the North Eastern and Central regions, including Mandera County.
