President Ruto Promises Ksh10,000 and Housing for Kenyans Affected by Floods
On Monday, May 6, President William Ruto promised Kenyans who were evacuated due to the ongoing floods a Ksh10,000 allowance from the National Government for their safety.
During his visit to Mathare, Nairobi, Ruto mentioned that the stipend would help families secure temporary housing as the government seeks a long-term solution.
The funds will be distributed to households that were evacuated by government officials with support from the Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Police, and National Youth Service.
“We have identified 40,000 households evacuated for safety reasons; each household will receive Ksh10,000 to find alternative housing while waiting for government assistance,” he stated.
“We have a list of evacuees and will provide them with funds for three months’ rent as the Government explores other options.”
Ruto assured Nairobi residents that there are measures in place to prevent mismanagement of the funds.

The President committed to personally overseeing that the funds are not misused by any corrupt groups.
Ruto noted that the flooding was a result of climate change and that Kenya has established plans to protect itself from such events in the future.
In the short term, Ruto announced that Kenya would start planting trees in Mathare and other riparian areas.
Therefore, Kenyans who had built informal housing on riparian land would receive alternative housing from the National Government.
Ruto announced that starting next week, a tender would be opened to construct 5,000 affordable homes in the Mathare region.
Once built, those who were evacuated would be given priority in moving into the new housing, according to the President.
Ruto thanked Mathare residents for complying with the government’s request to leave the flooded areas, acknowledging that this voluntary decision saved many lives.
