Political parties Registrar Nderitu Confirms Omar as UDA Secretary General

Ann Nderitu, the Registrar of Political Parties, has officially confirmed Hassan Omar’s appointment as Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

This confirmation follows the removal of Cleophas Malala, who had been serving in an acting capacity since February 2023.

In a letter obtained by Gossipa2z.com, Nderitu indicated that she had been informed of the party’s recent changes.

She instructed the party to conduct elections within the next six months to establish permanent officeholders.

Currently, all positions are being held on an interim basis.

“The office notes that many of the current UDA officials are serving in temporary roles,” Nderitu stated.

“In adherence to good governance practices and the responsibilities of this office, the party is directed to complete the elections within 180 days from the date of this letter,” she added.

Nderitu also instructed UDA to announce the new Secretary General in at least one daily newspaper with national reach and on its official website.

“According to Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, 2011, the party must publish the change in at least one daily newspaper with nationwide circulation and on the official party website, and notify this office for further processing.”

On August 2, 2024, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling party rescinded Cleophas Malala’s appointment as interim Secretary General.

The NEC announced that the changes take effect immediately.

“After extensive consultations and by Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution, the National Executive Committee has decided to appoint Vice-Chairperson Hon. Hassan Omar Hassan as the interim Secretary General.

The appointment of Cleophas Malala as interim Secretary General is now revoked,” stated the party.

The NEC meeting, led by party chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, followed an incident where some of Cleophas Malala’s supporters disrupted the party offices on the same day.

This occurred just a day after another faction of founding members announced Malala’s removal and named Joe Khalende as the new secretary-general.

Following the altercation, party chairperson Cecily Mbarire announced that the NEC meeting would thoroughly address the incident and decide on appropriate actions.
